Style Guidance for Timeless Photographs

One of the biggest questions clients ask before a session is: “What should we wear?” The good news? You do not need perfectly matching outfits or a completely new wardrobe to create beautiful images. The goal is simply to wear pieces that feel comfortable, cohesive, and true to you.
When you feel good in what you’re wearing, it shows in your photos
Start with Comfort First
If something constantly needs adjusted, feels too tight, or doesn’t feel like *you*, it will likely show during the session. I always recommend choosing outfits you can move, sit, walk, and interact comfortably in... especially for family sessions with little ones.
Flowy fabrics, relaxed fits, soft textures, and movement tend to photograph beautifully and naturally.
Colors that photograph beautifully:
* Cream
* Beige
* Taupe
* Olive green
* Soft blues
* Dusty rose
* Warm browns
* Muted earth tones
TEXTURES TO CONSIDER WEARING:
* linen
* knits
* cotton
* gauze fabrics
* denim
* layered neutrals
* subtle patterns
Avoid Wearing:
* neon colors
* large logos
* busy graphics
* harsh patterns
* overly bright athletic wear
* Apple watches or bulky smart watches (if possible)
DRESS FOR THE SEASON:
The best outfits usually make sense with the environment and weather.
Spring & Summer
Soft colors, flowy dresses, linen, breathable fabrics, bare feet, light layers.
Fall
Earth tones, cozy knits, denim, boots, layered textures.
Winter
Neutral coats, scarves, sweaters, deeper muted tones.
For Families: Start with Mom’s Outfit First
If you’re planning a family session, I always recommend choosing mom’s outfit first and building everyone else around it. Once you have one outfit you love, coordinating the rest becomes much easier.
Coordinate + Plan In Advance
Instead of everyone wearing the exact same color, focus on outfits that complement one another.
A good approach is choosing:
* 2–4 coordinating colors
* similar tones
* varied textures
Think cohesive rather than identical.
